Writing SpiderThe Black and Yellow Argiope, or writing spider, is a very large (the females can grow to 3" or larger; the males are significantly smaller) and colorful spider, with patterns of black, yellow, and white, which usually appear on the abdomen and sometimes the legs. The build large, very fine webs, usually about a meter off of the ground, and are all but invisible, excepting the center of the web. The writing spider gets its nickname from its practice of creating a thicker, zigzagging pattern at the center of its web. Writing spiders may bite if agitated, but are not dangerous to humans.
